Scenario A: Falling Stars
The sky has recently taken on a constant darkness above, though strangely enough, light persists for things that are observing from the ground. Thinking about it for too long is asking for a logic headache, so it’s probably best to just take it in stride and enjoy the view. The vibrantly colored auroras slowly dancing through the sky are quite the beautiful sight, with the glow of the strange objects moving with them resonating like stars. That one looks like it’s shooting across the sky - maybe if you make a wish, it’ll come true!

...Come to think of it, it looks like it’s getting closer, and fast. Maybe you should duck, or at least warn the person nearby that’s blissfully unaware of what’s incoming. The stars may only be as big and heavy as a volleyball, but they can still make quite the impact when they're falling fast enough.

Once the danger has passed, you'll have a miniature star all to yourself. It's hot, but you can touch it. Maybe you could think of something fun to do with it. Anyone up for a game of hot potato?

Scenario B: Let It Snow
The world is still trying to get the hang of weather, and snow is its latest venture. The snow itself is the part it seems to understand the best: snow is cold, snow can be compacted into shapes, snow falls from the sky in flakes, snow melts into water, water can also make ice, ice is hard and slippery...

What it doesn't seem to understand yet is how snow should collect - that is to say, not instantaneously. After only a few seconds of gently descending snowflakes, any area can suddenly be covered in a thick blanket of white as if it had been snowing for hours. If you happen to be sitting down you might find yourself buried under a snowdrift, or frozen to the ground if you're standing in water. The results can be even more disastrous if you're in water when the weather shifts - fortunately, breathing seems to be optional, so at least you won't drown if you decided to take a dip in the lake.

When the snowfall ends, the snow and ice vanish as suddenly as they had appeared. It may be awhile before that happens, though, so if you're caught in a tricky situation you may want to call for help.

Scenario C: A Tall Order
The Kichijoji Aerial District is mostly empty storefronts right now, but the large size of the rooms compared to the Merlaut Apartments has made them appealing as a place to call home. All they need is furnishing and cleaning and a big studio apartment could be yours. How hard could that be?

Well, the local wildlife has also taken a liking to the abandoned stores, and some of them can be trickier to evict than others. How did a winged giraffe get itself stuck here in the first place? How does it keep getting back in every time your back is turned? It's hard to say, but you'll need to figure something out if you don't want to start all over again with a new apartment. That, or you'll need to accept that your new roommate is a bit messy and likes to chew on your clothes.

Scenario D: Into The Unknown
At the edge of the known world is an infinite white expanse - the void, as people have come to call it. There doesn't seem to be much out there, so few have bothered to explore it further than the edges. What else could there be in a plane defined by its lack of substance, life and color?

Lately, however, something seems different about it. Far, far away, barely a glint in the endless sea of white... is something glowing out there, or is it just your imagination? Something about it calls to you, and you feel compelled to try to reach it. Yet no matter how far you walk it never seems to get close enough to see clearly, always just a distant flicker taunting you in the distance.

Before you know it, you're so far into the void you can barely see the silhouette of Mount Silver behind you. Do you keep trying, or is it time to turn back? Or are you the one chasing after someone else, hoping to stop them before they wander too far?

He's a good Papa <3

Once she's on the ground, he kneels down on one knee to bring himself closer to her level. At her question, he gives a good-natured smile.

"I'm fine, that's not even the fastest I've ever had to run away from something!" He laughs, the laugh of being glad to be alive, of chasing away fear -- not only for himself, but for her. There's no doubt that carrying her slowed him down, but he wasn't going to leave her behind. The possibility didn't even occur to him.

"I was more spooked than anything. That was pretty scary, wasn't it?" She seems pretty spooked herself, and for the two of them to begin to process their feelings about what just happened, it's important to first acknowledge them.

[a very good one ;3; ]

[personal profile] starinheaven 2021-02-07 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
“Yeah,” she admitted with a nod, since it was hard to deny!

It was interesting seeing an adult admit to being scared himself, but he still seemed very strong!

“I was scared we’d get hit, but we made it.”

She tried to give him a pat on the shoulder. “You’re a very good runner! Papa doesn’t run so fast.”

Thinking back, the image was funny enough, that it helped her calm down and even laugh it off (it’s good that they made it!), so her attention then turned to the fallen star.

“... oh! Is that it?”

She imagined it would be bigger.

Sam always felt that it was important for children to know grown-ups had feelings too, that they got sad and scared and even angry just like they did; that common thread put less distance between them. Even if he didn't admit to his feelings, children would get old enough to figure it out eventually; it's better to be honest from the start.

He'll allow her to pat his shoulder, or at least get as close as she can, and returns the gesture, resting his own hand on her smaller shoulder.

"I take care of lots of Pokemon, so I get lots of exercise every day." Or used to, anyway; but it explains why he can still run so fast at his age. He follows her gaze to the star, shining out of the small crater it made; he's really glad it didn't hit either of them, even if they can't die here.

"Do you want to take a closer look? We'll need to be careful." Normally, he'd be worried about radioactivity and other unseen dangers... but normally, actual stars aren't smaller than a person and don't fall out of the sky.

Not dealing with feelings properly pushed her parents apart, so even if she didn’t quite understand all the reasons why the professor made the decision to be so honest, she certainly noticed the difference!

“Oh, I’d love to!”

Now that they weren’t in any immediate danger, the star looked so beautiful and she couldn’t help but be curious about it!
symbolofstrength: (oh noes)

[personal profile] symbolofstrength 2021-02-07 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
He nods and stands back up, but lets his hand brush against hers in an offer to hold it. Then he walks forward slowly, cautiously, ready to grab her and run again if anything, anything unexpected happens. But nothing does, and the star just looks like a small, glowing rock.

Eventually, they draw near enough that he crouches down next to the star; glancing back up at her, he reaches for the star. No sooner do his fingers brush against it, however, than he yelps and hisses in pain, quickly drawing them back and instinctively popping them into his mouth.

After soothing his fingers for a moment, he releases them, glancing down at his hand to survey the damage. To Amber, he clarifies:

"It's really hot. Don't touch it with your bare hands, okay?"
starinheaven: (I'm still taken by surprise)

[personal profile] starinheaven 2021-02-07 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
“Oh, no!”

That looked like it really stung! Maybe they needed special tools to carry it, or gloves at least!

Amber looked at the star, then at the professor’s hands, then back at the star.

“Are you okay...? Did it feel like fire? Do you think I can carry it in my dress or will it burn... oh!”

She suddenly thought of something and crept closer to it.
“Doctor?”
She was assuming that’s what he was, since he wore a labcoat like her papa!
“What about that thing where you put a hot bowl of soup in a dish with cold water to help it cool down without making your noodles all watery?”
symbolofstrength: (thinking)

[personal profile] symbolofstrength 2021-02-07 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
His fingers are red, but not bleeding, and it doesn't look like he's going to get blisters either; it seems like he pulled his hand away in time.

"Ah -- Professor." He gently corrects her when he realizes she's addressing him; while he technically does have a PhD, he thinks of medical doctors when hears the word, and doesn't want to cause any confusion.

"Something like that might work, but if we cool it down, it might stop glowing, too." He'd still be interested in studying it, of course, but it loses a lot of the romance without its glow. And where would they get cold water, anyway?

He pats around his pockets with his uninjured hand, coming up with a length of cloth -- a scrap of towel or the like. But he looks to her first:

"Did you have something in mind?" Does she have ice powers or something?
starinheaven: (I hold sunlight and swallow fireflies)

[personal profile] starinheaven 2021-02-07 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
That’s good!

“Oh! Sorry, my papa’s a doctor, so I thought you were too. He was working on a project with a lot of other scientists. You dress like them!”

She brightened at the sight of the cloth, happy to have another option, but at the question, she blinked in confusion, then shook her head.

“No... I was just coming up with ideas! I didn’t even think this far... I thought I’d go looking for a pot big enough, maybe...”

No special powers yet!
symbolofstrength: (thinking)

[personal profile] symbolofstrength 2021-02-08 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
"No, it's okay." He drapes the towel over the star, then tenderly prods at it. Upon no further pain, he picks it up, careful to not let it touch his skin as before.

"Is your papa the kind of doctor that makes people feel better? Or the kind of doctor that does research?" Hopefully she's old enough to know a word like 'research', especially if her father is a scientist.

Her cold water idea isn't completely without merit, as he points something else out:

"We're going to need some cold water anyway. For my burn. Luckily, I know where to find some."

((Now I'm wondering, if Sam hears the name of Amber's father... is he going to know who he is? (Not about the Mewtwo project, obviously, but his work before that.) Do you think he would be well-known enough for Sam to have heard of him, considering they're both scientists? That might be interesting to play with!))
starinheaven: (it's happening all the time)

[personal profile] starinheaven 2021-02-08 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
((I actually thought of the very same thing, but didn’t want to impose! Yes, I think they definitely should have heard of each other, they probably ran in the same academic circles, until he accepted Giovanni’s offer...))

She watched him carry the star, even giggled a bit, at how he wrapped it. “It’s just like a sleeping baby! I wonder if stars dream...”

“Oh, no, he wasn’t a doctor like the ones at hospitals, my papa was researching cloning! Making copies of living things, like Pokemon...”

She only looked and sounded about eight, because that was how old she was in life, but she had been reawakened several times in four year courses... if she were growing normally, she might be 12 or even 16! But every time she died and came back, she was always only eight, but with a few more years of memories of the lab, her father, and her fellow clones.

A life in stasis, mostly spent in memories and make-believe, where she could not truly grow, until now.

She heard enough in the lab about the project to repeat some of it, but knew no more about the outside world.

If he asked more, she might tell him later when he’s not carrying something dangerous, that she was one of the test subjects too!

“That’s good! Let’s go there, Professor!”
symbolofstrength: (good idea)

[personal profile] symbolofstrength 2021-02-09 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Do you think stars are alive? Anything that's alive can dream." Artfully dodging the question to not shatter her innocent sense of wonder.

"Cloning, hmm? I research Pokemon too, but I've never done anything like that." Perhaps she already knows, was able to put his labcoat and his statement of 'I take care of lots of Pokemon' together, but it's best to be clear. He can't say he completely approves of cloning Pokemon, just because anything created by such a venture will live as a specimen from birth, and that doesn't seem like a very happy life.

"Did you know nature makes clones too? They're called identical twins -- one baby splits into two babies, and they're both identical to the original." They're not exactly the same thing, but the concept is close enough.

He leads the way toward the edge of the lake -- it's not ice cold, but it's cold enough for their purposes.

((Sounds good! BTW, I've got another character I can tag you with if you need more threads for samples -- not that I'm getting bored with our thread, not at all, just thought I'd make the offer! :P))

“My papa, Dr. Fuji, told me a story about how souls go to heaven after leaving earth and become stars... this one looks more like a glowing rock, but maybe it’s listening, but can’t speak?“

Yes, she thought she had figured it out, mostly! “Did you work at some kind of reserve? Or maybe you worked outside, in the field? Or did you have a very big lab, Professor?”

At the simplified explanation, she spun around, cheerfully. “Is that how twins work?! How mysterious...! My newest friend was made from an eyelash!”

((That could be fun! My only samples otherwise are quite a few years old, so it’d probably help! ^^))
symbolofstrength: (wait what)

[personal profile] symbolofstrength 2021-02-09 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Dr. Fuji...? Samuel knows that name. And as his brain brings up all the related memories... didn't Fuji basically disappear a few years ago, right after his daughter died? Not that he blames him, he had a rough time after he lost his own daughter-in-law... still, for a fleeting moment, he stares at Amber like he's seen a ghost.

But then he remembers all the time shenanigans going on in this place -- the boy claiming to be his grandson is far too old, to start with. So instead of looking at a dead girl... perhaps she just came from a point in time from before she died. Yes, that must be it.

"Oh, uh, my lab itself isn't too big, but I have a lot of land outside of it for the Pokemon to live and play and run around on." He awkwardly brings his attention back to their conversation.

"My name is Samuel Oak. Maybe you've heard of me?" He's only the most famous and respected Pokemon researcher around, and something of a 'science education' celebrity ala Bill Nye besides.
starinheaven: (I hold sunlight and swallow fireflies)

[personal profile] starinheaven 2021-02-09 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
“Oh! You’re that Professor Oak? Yes, you’ve been on TV too, haven’t you?”

Amber mostly liked to watch animated shows, but, she’s definitely glimpsed him on TV too, talking about the Kanto starters and that sort of thing! She tended to doze off after the initial excitement of seeing a cute Pokemon, but she might have been just a bit too young to follow along for long!!

“The Pokemon all looked very cute! I guess you must get lots of exercise with all those Pokemon!”

An overly adventurous and somewhat accident-prone Bill Nye, if it’s anything like the Professor Oak’s Pokemon Lectures!

She looked curiously down at the water.
“How will we use use the water? With the towel?”
symbolofstrength: (good idea)

[personal profile] symbolofstrength 2021-02-09 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
"That's right! You've seen my programs?"

Look, if Bill Nye had to deal with ornery animals with super powers, he'd get tossed around the room a few times too.

"Oh, no, nothing like that." He approaches the very edge of the water, holding out his burned hand to steady himself. "Careful, the mud here is slippery. Don't fall."

He looks down at the wrapped up star in his hand, considering where to put it while he takes care of his hand. He considers giving it to Amber -- and he's sure it'd make her happy to hold it -- but he doesn't want to risk her burning herself. So in the end, he just drops it in his labcoat pocket, but the glow penetrates through even that, though much dimmer.

"I just need to soak my hand in this water for a while." It'd be even better if it was running, but they can't be picky; the important thing is to cool his hand off so there's no further damage. With that, he kneels by the water's edge, leans over, and thrusts his hand in the water. The edge of his sleeve is getting a little wet, but he doesn't mind. It wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to his labcoat, even here.
starinheaven: (I love you)

[this is officially one of the cutest threads ever and Sam’s great ;3;]

[personal profile] starinheaven 2021-02-09 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
“Oh, sure!”

Fair point!

She watched the star glow in his pocket. While she would have preferred to carry it and even began lifting her hands for a second, thinking she’d get to hold it, she soon realized he was keeping it... besides, the gentler glow through cloth was just as enchanting.

“Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket... never let it fade away...”

Humming a little to herself, she rocked back and forth a little on her heels. Might not know all the words, but!

When she saw his sleeve start to get wet, she reached over to try and bunch and roll it up. “Let me help!”
symbolofstrength: (good idea)

<3

[personal profile] symbolofstrength 2021-02-10 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps if he can find more cloth to wrap it in, or a jar or something to put it in, he'll let her hold it. Until then, well, little fingers will find the gaps between the cloth more easily and get burned.

"No, it's okay! It's not a big deal if it gets a little wet." He doesn't want her falling and getting all wet just to help him out -- and having to fish her out of the water would defeat the purpose of keeping his sleeves dry in the first place. As it is, since the cuff is still buttoned, the sleeve somewhat resists her attempts to pull on it.

"So you said you had a friend made from an eyelash, right?" He returns to the topic to try and distract her. "Is that from your papa's cloning?"
starinheaven: (make believe is much too fun)

[sorry for the delay!]

“Yes! I think he was the only one who made it... he was interesting, he looked like a Pokemon, a very cute one, but could talk—well, think—like a person!”

Talking about Mewtwo certainly distracted her enough to stop, she spoke animatedly, stepping here and there, and gesturing a bit with her hands to convey something round and small, as Mewtwo had been then!

Is ok!

[personal profile] symbolofstrength 2021-02-16 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
"So a Psychic-type, then? A lot of them can talk with their thoughts." Not to mention he's met a Meowth that could talk as well, but her mentioning communication through thoughts makes his mind immediately leap to Psychic-types.

As they talk, the heat in his fingers gradually fades away in the cold water, and he withdraws his hand from the lake. They're still a bit red and shiny where they touched the star, but that's just from the damage that's already been done -- he's successfully prevented further harm. So he steps away from the lake, offering Amber his hand to help her away from the shore too.
