Welcome to Tabula Rasa's Test Drive Meme! As of this moment, apps for both secondary characters and new players are open. New player apps will be accepted until we’re able to fill our player cap as well as our app queue. For more information on this, please see the Applications page.

Whether you plan to app or not, anyone is welcome to use this meme as a way to try out the setting, test out a character for future app cycles, or just for fun. You may also borrow ideas from this meme’s prompts for use in the main game.

Threads from the TDM may be used as samples on your application. TDM samples must be 2 threads with different characters, each with at least 5 comments from your character. You may include your top-level comment if it is a thread you started.

Current players in the game may also claim an AC bonus by tagging other characters on the TDM. Please see the Activity Check page for details.

Scenario A: No Rest For The Weary
Sleep is a brand new concept for the world, but there are still some hiccups that need to be worked out. As one gets tired, their eyes get heavy and the lights around them begin to slowly dim to mentally prepare them for rest... or, sometimes, the world forgets about those reminders. When this happens, it's not unlikely for someone to abruptly pass out on the spot when reality remembers they should be more tired right about now. It's an easy thing to overdo!

With these bouts of narcolepsy becoming an increasingly common problem, some of the more mischievous creatures of the world have begun to take advantage of it. If someone is unfortunate enough to fall asleep while outside, they're at risk of getting a new makeover from one of the wild painters, or shiny trinkets snatched by curious feathered dragons. There could also be something large and hungry roaming the area, or they might fall asleep in a precarious position. With so many ways for things to go wrong, it never hurts to bring a friend along when you're out and about.

There's also a very rare, very unusual occurrence where sometimes a person will fall asleep in one place and wake up deep within the tunnels of Mementos... but maybe it's just a case of sleepwalking? Although it is strange that no one ever seems to see it happen.

Scenario B: An Ode for a Gentle World 2: Electric Boogaloo
Whenever rain and lightning flash outside the electronics of the world begin to awaken. Though often unreliable thanks to their reliance on the weather, the few non-sentient machines in the world certainly have their uses. Trains carry people from place to place, and the computers offer a selection of programs for both work and play.

The jukebox in the Heavenly Blanc provides hours of "entertainment", for as long as the current storm ends up lasting. Music is something that's already been introduced to the world, but it seems that this time it's tried to put its own spin on things to questionable results. The songs it plays are, at first, the same few pop songs that have been taught to it, sung by an androgynous and generic-sounding voice. By the end of the first verse it starts adding new instruments - and it's apparently unsure of what does and does not count as an instrument. New lyrics have been added as well, featuring verses that are as likely to be random strings of nonsensical words as they are to be exact conversations that have been overheard tuned to fit the song. These new remixes are loud, confusing, and completely awful to listen to, only growing more chaotic as the track drags on.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to force the jukebox to turn off, and volume stubbornly turns itself back up every time thunder booms in the distance. But it does have a karaoke version, if you're into that.

Scenario C: Gotta Catch ‘Em All!
Poké Balls are the hottest new thing to hit the market! Try your luck at Shibumenosaki's gatchapon machines and you might even win yourself a Master Ball, the only ball with a perfect-catch guarantee*! The economy is fake and everything is free, so what do you have to lose besides your dignity?

Once you have your favorite Poké Ball, all that's left is to use it! The "using it" part may be much harder than the "getting it" part, however. There are several different species that currently roam the world, and though some of them can be quite docile, others range from feisty to downright dangerous. It might be better to start with a small bird before trying for a vicious finned dragon. Even if you succeed in catching a dangerous species, there's no guarantee it'll want to listen to you without a great deal of convincing. If you want to be a good trainer, you have to put in the work for it!

* 1/8000 odds, perfect-catch is not guaranteed, Shibumenosaki UA is not responsible for any harm caused by the use of their products

(kimihiro grabs the sake then and puts the cups on the tray to make it easier to carry, gesturing at the other so that they can go outside. surely they can't smoke inside as damien already pointed out.)

Got quite a lot. The pipe burns it well, so it lasts.

[he stands, gathering his things as he goes, and gestures for Kimihiro to lead the way. he'll follow after him, as always, limping]

Someone's probably going to give me shit, for picking up the habit again, but ... [but right now, he really doesn't give a shit]

(watanuki doesn't comment, because really, it's not his place. everything is a transaction and the consequences are simply a reaction to damien's own doing. he's got his price worth.

when they're seated, it doesn't take long for watanuki to roll a cigarette for the other from a napkin, tapping it a few times on the table to settle the tobacco inside and make sure no air separated them. it'd make it harder to smoke that way.)

There you go. (he hands it before he takes a match to light his own source of nicotine.) This tobacco is very special, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Are you familiar with the myth of the Rabbit on the Moon?

Thanks.

[he'll just lean in for a light, too, when Kimihiro has his pipe lit, then lean back, taking a drag off the cigarette. he holds it in for a moment, like he's smoking a joint rather than just a cigarette, then lets it out on a sigh, through his nose. god, he's missed smoking]

[when he's finished with his moment, and at the question, he starts to shake his head, stops, and then ultimately commits' to it, after all]
I know it's a Japanese myth -- something about it pounding something with a mortal and pestle for all eternity? [other than that, no]

There are many variations.

(kimihiro allows the smoke to leave his lips and nose along with the words. it's a sip of sake before he continues. not only is he often visited by most things of tales, but he has enough knowledge to write a collection of tales and lore. good thing damien likes learning.)

The man who lived on the moon decided to visit Earth one day, disguised as a beggar. He found a monkey, a rabbit and a fox, and as a test, decided to ask them for food. The monkey brought him fruit he harvested from trees and the fox gave him a fish he managed to catch, all in their kind graces.

(and another inhaling of the pipe. the smoke is thick, almost atmospheric and alluring as he exhales. there's just a smidge of a smile on kimihiro's expression. it's the first time since he stepped into the void that he felt like himself.)

The rabbit could do none of the sort, so he started a fire and jumped on it to be cooked. The man on the moon praised him, recognizing his kind sacrifice, and took the rabbit to the moon with him, which is why, to us, there's the shape of a rabbit when looking at a full moon.

(and very gently, kimihiro taps the pipe to remove any burnt tobbaco.)

The same rabbit also owns a pipe shop and travels dimensions selling them and all things necessary for it. That's where the tobbaco you are currently smoking comes from. He's the only one who makes kiserus with this quality, spirit or otherwise.

[if Damien weren't dating a goddess, if he wasn't painfully aware just how many powered people are here, he might call bullshit. the Rabbit on the Moon running a smoke shop? preposterous]

[as it stands, though, Damien just raises his eyebrows and then lowers them, shrugging off what little bit of disbelief he might be carrying. he takes another drag off of his cigarette, before:]
Shame he never showed up in my dimension. [or at least not that he's aware of] This is good. [the tobacco, he means, obviously]

(kimihiro wouldn't be surprised if he did call bullshit on it - he had did so much before he started to accept it, or perhaps, before things he called bullshit on made him accept it.)

Or perhaps he has. (kimihiro shrugs. they'd never know and he's not there assuming damien or anyone could see spirits. he has only met few people who could, after all.) It is, isn't it?

(kimihiro, out of politeness, had brought another sake dish for damien before he sat. now, it's being offered as kimihiro pours some on mugetsu's.) Are you drinking with us?

[Damien shrugs, too. maybe he's right, maybe he has. for all that he's been a little busy, back home, and for all that he wasn't much of a believer in the fantastical, in that kind of fantastical, maybe he missed him]

[either way, after a beat, he starts to reach for the sake dish]
If you wouldn't mind.

(one would never pour themselves beverages in japan, so, after damien's sake was poured, he offered the bottle for damien to do the same for him.)

We pour for one another. (kimihiro teaches, a smile on his face.) I believe I missed your name.

[he's going to be a font of knowledge about Japan, by the time he goes home and for as little as it matters, all things considered. regardless, though, he reaches for the bottle, to pour one out for Kimihiro, and as he holds it out to him, he answers:] Damien Brenks.

[a beat]

And you are?

[personal profile] kimihiros 2020-12-03 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Kimihiro Watanuki. Just Watanuki is fine. (honestly, preferrable, even if at this point, he knows that's probably not even his real name. it's fine.

kimihiro took a sip, and if it's strong, he doesn't even react.)

[personal profile] abeautifulgame 2020-12-03 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Last name?

[what is it with the Japanese and using their last names over their given names? maybe he should have asked Ren about that convention, when they were discussing Japanese culture. maybe he'll ask Kimihiro, at some point, before too much longer]

[either way, he doesn't think too much about his non-reaction to the sake. he's obviously a drinker, if he asked for sake, right off the bat. for all he knows, the burn is familiar]
kimihiros: (w3)

[personal profile] kimihiros 2020-12-03 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Doing otherwise is a mark of disrespect unless you’re extremely close and in the right sort of casual environment.

(after he gets to know kimihiro, he definitely will be a pro, because he doesn't even ask too much and he already has an answer. it's almost a gulp, his dish almost over when he takes another drag of the pipe.)

It can change, given enough time and effort.

[he hums, at that, the sound just shy of a laugh]

Well, that makes so much more sense. [a beat] Watanuki, then.
